The 10 Best Films of 2012

This past year was a year of firsts, including the first movie to make more than $200 million on its opening weekend and the first movie to be presented in the high frame rate of 48 fps. It was a year of life imitating art, sometimes tragically and violently. There was plenty of bad with the good, and like any year, only a rare few rose to the top. I did not ubiquitously enjoy the movies throughout the year as I did in 2011, but there were still some real great ones. Here’s my ten favorite….

This Week: Kevin and Kristin Dreyer Kramer start off talking about Halloween and trick-or-treat costumes. Soon, they move to the subject of the latest scary movie, Sinister. Then things get political as Iranian extremists take over the Magical Studio in the Sky and take the hosts hostage. While trapped, Kevin and Kristin talk about Argo, then fight their way to freedom with the skillz they learned from watching Kevin James in Here Comes the Boom. Safely back home, they give a preview to Seven Psychopaths and discuss the box office before moving on to DVDs and Blu-ray and riding off into the sunset.

Episode 269 – Kevin’s Stripper Story

This Week: In order to be relevant with Hollywood and the stars of the new movie Rock of Ages, Kevin invites fellow child-of-the-80s Sean Dwyer from FilmJunk.com into the Magical Studio in the Sky. There, they talk about Tom Cruise’s sagging breasts, jukebox musicals puked on by Glee and when Adam Sandler will stop making movies like Merman… er… That’s My Boy. Kevin also tells how he almost became a male stripper, after talking box office and before laying out a Fat Guy Five about Awesome Tom Cruise performances. Then it’s the DVD Round-Up before sending Sean back into his junkyard of film.

The Idiot Boxers – Episode 59

In this very special episode: The Idiots gather once again in the Magical Studio in the Sky to make it across the bridge of regular-season shows and the summer-seasons series. Even though there wasn’t much happening on the television front these past couple weeks, they find some things to talk about, including Kevin’s shenanigans at his sister’s wedding and Merrill being a lightning rod for Prometheus haters. They do manage to talk about some really depressing television news, along with a handful of reviews. And Merrill has also managed to join the world of the enlightened by catching up on Cougar Town. Finally, it’s a sound-off, DVDs and recommendations before they Idiots head off into the summer.

Episode 268 – Pun Entirely Intended

This Week: Because not all the critics out there in Criticland were able to check out an early screening of Prometheus, Kevin makes a desperate move and has Nick Herum from MoviesHateYouToo.com back on the show. Nick graciously agrees, but won’t stoop to seeing the latest Madagascar movie. Still, the two Fat Guys manage to talk about the link between Santa and the Ice Age films, the finer points of queefing and take some pathetically unfair shots at Brittany Murphy (please don’t hate us). They also manage to have a cogent and (sometimes) clean discussion of the movies this week. They rattle down a Fat Guy Five about worthy prequels, and later fill up on DVD and Blu-ray recommendations.

Episode 246 – I Need Some Scratch

This Week: In the cold wasteland of January, Kevin invites Rudie Obias back into the Magical Studio in the Sky to talk about the end of 2011 and what to look forward to in 2012. They also look briefly at The Devil Inside, which wasn’t screened for press and represents the only new wide release this week (an honor that is shared with Nicolas Cage’s Season of the Witch from last year). Kevin and Rudie talk about their most anticipated films of 2012 and what they though worked in 2011. They also go blue in the third segment, talking about what they would be willing to do to make money in the new year. They also go over the recent box office numbers and lay down a Fat Guy Five about great exorcist moments in film. Finally, they chat about the new DVDs and Blu-rays for the week before heading back out into that cold wasteland of January films.
