WHAT IT’S ABOUT
Joe Flanigan from “Stargate Atlantis” stars as a soldier who overseas a group of scientists running an experiment with extra-dimensional travel. After a demonstration of the device goes wrong, the building is thrown into a parallel world with a prehistoric past where the humans have to survive giant monsters as they try to find a way home.
WHAT I LIKED
As a fan of “Stargate Atlantis,” I really like Joe Flanigan as a hero. It’s a shame that his career pretty much ended once that series ended (and the powers that be behind “Stargate” ruined the entire franchise with the godawful “Stargate Universe”). So at the very least, it’s nice to see Flanigan getting some work in this Syfy movie.
Like many of the other Syfy Original Movies, “Ferocious Planet” is fun to watch with the family. It’s not too violent, and there’s almost no sexual references in it at all. My kids got a kick out of the dinosaurs, so that was fun.
As Syfy Original Movies go, it’s different at least. Rather than being produced by The Asylum (which are fun films in their own right but have a studio-specific cookie-cutter feel to them). “Ferocious Planet” isn’t trying to be a bad movie like the Asylum films and Roger Corman movies do. It’s just low budget and exists in that world.
WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE
As much as I like seeing Joe Flanigan back on the screen, I do feel sorry for how far his career has slipped. He’s gone to a cheesy Syfy movie world, and this world has all the other problems with cheesy Syfy movies… limited budget, restricted locations, cheap effects, substandard writing and underdeveloped characters.
Sigh… poor Joe Flanigan.
